Here are ten hitters whose skills with the bat and glove earned them membership in the Hall of Fame, but who never played in the World Series. Criteria The World Series was first played in 1903, so I selected Hall of Fame players who began their careers after 1900. Some of these players made it to the post season in the League Championship Series, but never advanced to the World Series.

Tigers decline Peralta's option for next year (AP)

The Detroit Tigers have declined shortstop Jhonny Peralta's $7.25 million option for next season but say they still hope to re-sign him. Team president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said Tuesday the club is "optimistic" a deal can be worked out. Peralta will receive a $250,000 buyout.

Indians trim roster, send 3 players to minors (AP)

The Cleveland Indians have reduced their major league roster by sending infielders Wes Hodges, Drew Sutton and outfielder Chad Huffman outright to Triple-A Columbus. The team made the moves to protect key younger players from the Rule 5 draft in December. Clubs have until Nov. 19 to finalize their rosters.

The Cleveland Indians have sent infielder Andy Marte to Triple-A Columbus, making him eligible for free agency. Marte was once tabbed as the club's future third baseman, but has been a disappointment since he was acquired as part of a 2006 trade with Boston. The Indians have designated him for assignment before, but he went unclaimed.

In the eyes of most, the San Francisco Giants were fortunate to make it to the post-season, let alone advance to the World Series. The Giants barely snuck into the playoffs with a win over the San Diego Padres on the last day of the season to determine the final playoff spot in the National League. Once they arrived though, they played like a team who had been there before. They eliminated the Braves in four games, knocked out the two-time defending NL champion Phillies in five games to advance to the World Series for the first time since 2002.
